Computer Science: Mission statement

The Computing department uses project based learning to develop pupils into autonomous users of computers and related technologies. The department develops programming, communication, project management and collaborative skills in a drive to produce computer literate independent learners with a clear understanding of the operation and utilisation of computers.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 Computer Science, pupils develop an understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science – abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation. Through a range of units, pupils analyse problems in computational terms, and gain experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems. Pupils are encouraged to become confident, autonomous and discerning users of the computer technologies, including using new or unfamiliar tools analytically to solve problems. Pupils, from the outset are taught how to be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information both inside and outside of school.

Key Stage 4

At Key stage 4, pupils can choose to study ICT and/or Computing at GCSE. Those who chose neither option have the opportunity to develop their understanding of Computing and its application during our enrichment days.

In Computing GCSE, pupils study the fundamentals underpinning computers and programming through a range of realistic contexts. Pupils gain practical experience of programming in a number of environments and develop their own system as part of their controlled assessment. In ICT GCSE, pupils learn how to become discerning users of ICT, applying their practical skills in a range of contexts. They learn about real life use of ICT in various scenarios and the possible impact of IT use from an ethical, legal, environmental and economic viewpoint. Pupils are taught the risks of using ICT and learn the importance of having safe, secure and responsible practises. More information can be found about the ICT GCSE here.

Key Stage 5

In the sixth form, can opt for Computing and/or ICT at AS and A2 levels.

Computing at AS & A2 is especially useful for pupils who wish to embark on further study in Computer Science, or who wish to pursue a career in computing or a related profession. Pupils study computer operation and programming in depth. The complex nature of the coursework for this course and the technical nature of the examinations mean that previous experience of programming either through the computing GCSE or outside of core curriculum time is essential.

In ICT at AS and A2, pupils study the use of ICT in society in depth. They have to develop advanced software skills and understanding of the impact and consequences of the use of ICT in real life. The study of ICT at A level can form the basis of further study of IT or can be a sound basis for employment in a vast array of careers where the use of IT is prevalent.
